- Updated: September 17, 2013
Vancouver Canucks President and General Manager Michael D. Gillis announced today that the Canucks have reduced their pre-season roster by eight players.
The following players have been assigned to the Utica Comets of the AHL:
Ludwig Blomstrand Left Wing
The 20-year-old native of Sweden comes to Utica after an impressive showing at the Canucks Young Stars Classic in Penticton, BC with three points over the four game event. Blomstrand arrives with AHL experience after he skated in 8 games last season with the Chicago Wolves, and contributed a goal and an assist. He also has 2 years of experience playing professionally in Sweden.
Mathieu Corbeil Goaltender
Following a standout campaign in the Central Hockey League with the Missouri Mavericks last season, Corbeil was the first ever goaltender signed by the Comets organization. The 2010-11 Memorial Cup winner is coming off of a strong showing at the Young Stars Classic where he recorded a 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers with 19 saves on 21 shots.
Sacha Guimond Defense
The reigning ECHL Defenseman of the Year comes to Utica after an impressive showing at the Canucks training camp, and in the Young Stars Showcase. The Utica Comets first-ever signee, netted four points in four games during the showcase and will add a strong puck moving presence to the Comets blueline this season. Guimond had two stints in the AHL last year.
Alex Friesen Center
Following an accomplished career in the Ontario Hockey League, where he had three straight seasons at more than a point per game, Friesen made his professional debut in the Canucks organization last season. The St. Catharines, Ontario native skated in 42 AHL games, and scored his first AHL goal on Feb. 1 against Milwaukee and maintained a positive rating for the year.
David Pacan Right Wing
Another off-season signee for the Comets, Pacan made his AHL debut last season with the San Antonio Rampage. On Nov. 30, the winger recorded two assists against Lake Erie for his first multi-point game in the AHL. Prior to the Rampage, Pacan posted an impressive 52 points in 57 games for the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL. A former Chicago Blackhawks draftee, Pacan is a former 29-goal scorer in the OHL and brings an impressive scoring resume the Comets.
The following players have been invited to the Utica Comets training camp:
Mitch Elliot Left Wing
Standing at an imposing 6-foot-5, Elliot comes to the Canucks organization following his fourth season with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL. Elliot finished seventh in the league last year with 147 penalty minutes. Elliot does not currently have a contract with the Comets.
Jesse Mychan Left Wing
Mychan had a breakout campaign offensively with the Tri-City Americans in his over-age season last season, where he had 41 points (19-22-41) in 60 games, all of which were career highs. The Saskatoon, SK native showed off his offensive vision, and willingness to rough it up at the Young Stars Classic, netting two assists in three games, along with a fight.
Wes Myron Forward
A 2012 draftee of the Vancouver Canucks, Myron comes to Utica following his professional debut last season with the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL. Myron, a 6-foot-2 forward from Victoria, British Columbia had nine points in 17 games last season with the Wings, after joining the team mid-season. Myron began the year with Boston University in Hockey East and could bring a strong offensive skillset to The AUD if he can earn a roster spot.
