Abbotsford, BC- The Utica comets fell short in their first pre-season game Sunday night vs the Abbotsford Heat, by the score of 5-2.
Intensity was the prevailing word as tempers flared to the tune seven fights and 104 penalty minutes between the two teams. Alex Biega and Kellan Tochkin took care of the scoring for the Comets, netting a goal a piece.
The Comets struggled to find scoring chances through most of the first period falling behind 3-0 before Biega found the back of the net on the powerplay, 17:35 into the period. Defenseman Sacha Guimond picked up the assist on the first preseason tally in franchise history. The game was testy from the get-go as the first period accounted for three of the game’s seven fights, and 52 of the 104 penalty minutes.
The Heat opened the scoring in the second period, as Dean Arsene stretched the lead to 4-1, with a goal at the 9:28 mark. The Comets scored their final goal of the game on a breakaway afer Darren Archibald hit Kellan Tochkin with a pass as Tochkin stepped out of the penalty box.
The intensity picked up again in the third period featuring four fights. Mathieu Corbiel played the third period in net for the Comets, turning aside all nine shots he faced. The Heat’s Ben Hanowski added his second goal of the game with an empty netter at the 19:21 mark.
Joacim Eriksson tended the net for the Comets during the first two periods, allowing four goals in 18 shots. Joni Ortio allowed one goal on 10 shots for the Heat, and Laurent Brossoit allowed one goal on seven shots. The Comets’ Kellan Tochkin took home 3rd Star honors playing in his hometown.
