Wilkes-Barre, PA - The Utica Comets peppered Penguins goaltender Casey DeSmith but suffered a 2-1 regulation loss on Sunday afternoon at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

The teams battled through a scoreless first period with a high shot total favoring the Comets 21-14. The 21 shots tied a season-high for Utica in one period of play. Comets goaltender Michael Garteig and DeSmith completed the first 20 minutes unscathed.

Darren Archibald tallied his 21st goal of the season with a rebound score at 9:50 of the second period. The goal was scored on the power play with assists from Evan McEneny and Cody Kunyk. 41 seconds later, Sahir Gill fired a wrist shot for his sixth of the year on goal with the man advantage. Derrick Pouliot and Zach Aston-Reese assisted to tie the game at one.

6:10 into the third period, Dominik Simon scored the game winning goal after a scramble for a loose puck in front of the net. His 14th of the year was assisted by Tim Erixon and Kevin Porter. Despite pulling Garteig for the extra attacker in the final minutes, the Comets could not score and lost 2-1.

Garteig made 31 saves and suffered his third loss of the season. DeSmith made 45 saves and improved his record to 18-4-2. The Comets scored one power play goal on four changes while killing two of three penalties.
