COMETS STREAK SNAPPED BY DEVILS

Nov 28, 2018

Binghamton, N.Y. – The Utica Comets had their three-game winning streak come to an end after a 4-2 loss at the hands of the Binghamton Devils on Wednesday night at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.

A back and forth first period saw the Devils take the game’s first lead, using a counterattack that resulted in a loose puck in the crease that was pushed across the line by Nathan Bastian. The Comets evened things up with less than a minute remaining in the first period and on their third power play of the game. A one-timer from Jesse Graham left a rebound at the side of the goal that was poked in by Brendan Gaunce.

Binghamton re-established their one-goal lead early in the second period and on a man advantage of their own, as John Quenneville’s glove-side wrist shot pushed the home team ahead 2-1. Seven minutes later, the Devils’ lead was doubled, courtesy of Egor Sharangovich’s fifth of the year.

Zack MacEwen drew Utica back to within a goal after an incredible individual effort at the 12:51 mark of the second. MacEwen slipped the puck through the skates of a defender and walked towards the goal where he deposited a wrist shot over the leg of Mackenzie Blackwood.

The Comets threw everything they could at Blackwood during the third period, but the Binghamton netminder withstood each opportunity. Ryan Schmelzer put the game out of reach with an empty netter with under two minutes remaining.
