COMETS TRIPPED UP BY MARLIES

Toronto, Ont. – The Utica Comets fell by a score of 3-1 to the Toronto Marlies Saturday night at the Ricoh Coliseum.

The Comets struck first blood courtesy of Nikolay Goldobin just 6:30 into the opening period. Reid Boucher and Alexis D’Aoust picked up the assists on the power play goal.

Rich Clune tied the game three minutes into the middle frame, banking a shot off of Thatcher Demko’s foot. Ben Smith and Andrew Nielsen were credited with the assists.

Kerby Rychel gave the Marlies a 2-1 lead at the 12:08 mark of the third period with a power play goal assisted by Nielsen and Miro Aaltonen. Nikita Soshnikov scored a late empty net goal to seal the victory.

Demko finished with 24 saves, while Garrett Sparks stopped 19 of 20 shots. The Comets power play went 1-2, while the man down unit killed off six of seven penalties.

The Comets are back in action tomorrow afternoon for a rematch with the Marlies. Puck drops at 4 p.m. at Ricoh Coliseum. The game can be heard on 94.9 KROCK and viewed on AHL Live.
