Back in Central NY: Meet Comets' Defenseman, Eamon Powell

Utica, NY – With the offseason in full swing, Comets’ management has been hard at work as it looks to augment a roster that brought the team within a point of clinching a playoff spot this past season. Free agency has led to a slew of new signings, and among the newcomers is 24-year-old defenseman Eamon Powell whom we got a chance to chat with as part of the Comets’ summer FaceTime series.

A native of Marcellus, NY, Powell is entering his second professional season and will get the opportunity to play less than 60 miles from his hometown after signing a one-year AHL contract with the Comets. “I’m super excited. I played all around this area growing up. I’m sure I’ll have a lot of family and friends come to a bunch of games with a couple teams in our division being based up Upstate New York, so that’ll be cool and I’m just looking forward to getting going,” he said.

Powell, who was originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the fourth round of the 2020 NHL Draft, spent most of his rookie season with the Charlotte Checkers (AHL), notching seven points (1g, 6a) in 23 outings, while also recording three assists in four appearances with the Savannah Ghost Pirates (ECHL). He unfortunately suffered a broken jaw in just the second game of the year and would sit out for most of the first half of the season but mentioned that he learned a lot and had a good experience overall playing down in Charlotte.

The right shot defenseman enjoyed a five-year collegiate career, the entirety of which was spent at Boston College (BC) where he served as captain each of his last two seasons. In his first year as captain, he led all Eagles’ defensemen with 38 points (5g, 33a) in 40 games. Powell is not the only BC product on the Comets roster. Forward Marc McLaughlin spent four years with the Eagles and was also a two-time captain, and forward Jack Malone played there for one season as well. Powell stated how it will be nice to have a couple familiar faces in the locker room when he reunites with his former teammates this fall, having previously played two seasons with McLaughlin and one with Malone on Chestnut Hill.

Now back in Central New York for the summer, Powell is preparing for the upcoming season. In describing his offseason schedule, he noted, “Most mornings throughout the week, I’m working out and training, typically from 9-11 AM. A couple days a week, I’ll head over to Syracuse University and hop on the ice with my workout group. And then aside from hockey, I like to golf. My parents also share a house on a lake with a bunch of my extended family, so I’ll head up there and do some fishing as well.”

As far as the rest of the summer, Powell mentioned that he’ll be attending a few of his cousins’ weddings and visiting his older brother in Boston, but will mostly stay close to home in New York, gearing up for what he hopes will be a promising season with the Comets.
