Aug 26, 2025

UTICA, NY – The Utica Comets announced today that Joe Benson has joined the organization for his first season as the Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations.

A native of Andover, MA, Benson has had a passion for hockey and broadcasting since he was a kid. He attended Colby College in Waterville, ME, where he gained experience calling games for the men's hockey team.

After graduating in 2017, Benson began a career in software sales while calling games on weekends for local hockey teams in the Boston area such as UMass Lowell and the Boston Junior Bruins. He decided to go full-time into hockey in late 2022 when he joined the NAHL's Corpus Christi IceRays as the Director of Broadcasting and Communications where he provided play-by-play coverage and helped manage video content, press releases, and media availability.

Over the past two seasons, Benson served as the Play-by-Play Broadcaster and a Corporate Partnerships Executive for the Kansas City Mavericks of the ECHL. In addition to calling every game, he also helped drive sponsorship revenue and created written content for the team's website and social media channels.

In his free time, Benson enjoys spending time at the gym, playing hockey, and volunteering in the community.

Benson will handle all play-by-play duties for the Comets this season on AHLTV on FloHockey and 94.9 KROCK. He will also oversee media relations efforts, written content, and team communications.

Comets hockey kicks off on October 10th at 7pm against the Cleveland Monsters. 8 Game Packs are available now at uticacomets.com/pack
