New Jersey Devils Prospect Profile: Seamus Casey
Sep 23, 2025
Utica, NY – Prior to the start of NHL training camp in New Jersey last week, we were fortunate to catch up with one of the Devils’ top prospects, Seamus Casey.
The 21-year-old defenseman landed a spot on the Devils’ roster last year and was in the lineup for the season opener in Prague against the Buffalo Sabres. In just his second game, he scored his first career NHL goal and went on to record three goals and an assist in his first five games as a Devil.
Despite not being with the Comets at the beginning of the season, Casey was grateful for the opportunity with the Devils and for the feedback they provided which served him well in his transition to Utica. “(We had) a clearly laid out plan of what to focus on in practices and games, and between me and the staff we tried to execute that to the best of our ability and overall it was a really positive experience.”
Casey made his AHL debut on October 25th last year against Laval and picked up right where he left off with New Jersey, recording nine points over seven straight games and finishing the season with 18 points in 30 games with the Comets. When asked about his ability to contribute offensively, he commented, “I love to play offense too and help out whenever I can…I love to play with the puck on my stick and play in the offensive zone with my teammates. Things went well on the offensive side (last year) and I'm looking to keep that up, but you have to be a complete player around all sides of the puck.”
In addition to the help of the coaching staff, Casey mentioned that the support from other Comets players made his experience in Utica a special one. “You go down the line, all of (the guys) were tremendous. I played with Colton White for most of my time there. He’s a great player but an even better guy. The way we communicated and helped each other out on the back end, (getting to play with him) was a great opportunity.”
With his sights set on making it back to the NHL, the Florida native discussed some of his focus areas and how his teammates and coaches in Utica aided him in his development last season. “Not being one of the biggest defensemen out there, there’s always room to focus on being more physical; I never want there to be any doubts there…It’s just becoming as consistent as I can be in all areas (which) comes back to (the help of) the coaching staff and some of the older guys. (There are) those daily habits on the ice that might seem trivial, but you have to be able to do the little things right.”
There are also daily habits off the ice, such as being on time and acting professional, that become even more important at the pro level. Casey shared that this was a big learning point for him and something he will take forward as he continues to progress in his career.
Another intangible that the budding defenseman took away from his time in Utica was mental fortitude. In mid-December last season, Casey sustained an injury that sidelined him for nearly two months. “When you’re not on the road trips and not out there with the guys everyday on the ice, it can feel like you’re not really doing anything but you have to stay super dialed in on your rehab so you can get back as soon as possible…You can’t let any of your off-ice habits slip when it comes to your diet and sleep…(You try to) stay in as good of shape as you can without practices and games, but I’d say the hardest part was the mental side of it,” he stated.
The former second-round pick earned himself another stint in New Jersey when he was called up towards the end of the regular season, playing five total games in the month of April which included a first-round playoff game against the Carolina Hurricanes, racking up an impressive three assists over that stretch. Already on the Devils’ radar, he was nominated as an alternate captain during the recent Prospects Challenge in Buffalo where he notched a highlight reel goal and also showcased his leadership skills.
In talking with Casey on the eve of NHL training camp, he said, “I’m (looking forward) to seeing where I’m at. I feel really confident with this (past) summer of training and everything I’ve done on and off the ice. I’m excited to get into some battles and get some competitive practices going…It’s been a long wait. You enjoy the longer summer but you don’t want to go this long without hockey.”
The University of Michigan product spent the past few weeks prior to training camp at his alma mater for what would have been his senior year and was able to catch up with some of his former teammates and train with other alumni. He mentioned that he spent most of the summer down in Florida in the Bonita Springs area where he grew up, skating and training with a group of 10-12 guys consisting mostly of other pros as well as some college hockey players.
As much as Comets fans would miss seeing Casey blaze up and down the ice at the Adirondack Bank Center, his earning a full time spot on the Devils’ roster would be a strong point of pride for Utica and a true testament to the organization’s goal of helping players develop and advance in their careers. With his impressive skating ability and offensive flare, Casey has already proven he can make an impact at the NHL level and it should come as no surprise to see him get more reps in a Devils sweater this season.
